Five reasons to become a 'Mental Health First Aider'

We think everyone should have the opportunity to become a Mental Health FIrst Aider. Here, we give that opportunity to everyone that works for us within the first 6 months. The two day course covers a number of important topics such as suicide, psychosis, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and more importantly what we can do to help others contending with these issues.

Reason 1: Get a sort after qualification

Being a MHFA’der is great for your CV. It's a valuable qualification which employers are increasingly looking for as they look to transform their workplaces into ones that look after employee wellbeing. Workplace wellbeing is increasingly something that employers are interested in and this would give you confidence to talk about Good Mental Health and wellbeing in an interview or at work

Reason 2: Self Improvement

Learn skills that will not only improve your own ability to look after yourself but those around you. Have you ever had an awkward conversation around mental health with someone and didn't know quite what to say or how to help? Don't worry,  it is normal but doesn't have to be like that. After this two day course you will feel much more confident in having those conversations.

Reason 3: Be part of something bigger

Mental Health First AId England CIC are the training body that train the trainers and in their recent newsletter they said that 1 in 80 people in the UK have been trained! Congratulations to them and us all, but there is still much more work to be done! Their goal though is to train 1 in 10 people within the UK with these skills and awareness. Would you like to be part of something that's helping millions of people?

Reason 4: Get a new perspective on Mental Health

One of the take away messages for sure is that we all have mental health. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not and more importantly there is something you can do about it! Even though you may train to help others as a MHFA’der you will undoubtably learn things which you will use to help yourself. Maybe trainees come away with new tools and ideas to try in order to ensure that they are in a good place to be able to help others

Reason 5: You get the best homework ever!

After day 1 you get homework, most people moan, until they realise that its ‘happy hour’. Spend one hour on yourself recharging your emotional batteries. Interestingly some people struggle because of work and family commitments and so it's a good learning opportunity to re-evaluate your schedule… why? Because you can't pour from an empty cup.
